Tariffs and Customs Duties: Understanding Their Impact on Your Maruse Order

Recent developments in U.S. trade policy have brought terms like "tariffs" and "customs duties" into the spotlight. At Maruse, we prioritize transparency and want to ensure our customers understand how these changes may affect their orders.

What Are Tariffs and Customs Duties?

  • Tariffs: Taxes imposed by a government on imported goods, often used to protect domestic industries or as a response to trade imbalances.
  • Customs Duties: Similar to tariffs, these are taxes levied on goods when they cross international borders, based on the item's value, type, and origin.

Do You Have to Pay Import Duties?

In most cases, you don’t have to worry. The United States has a de minimis threshold of $800 USD, meaning that if the total value of your order is under $800, no customs duties or import taxes apply. This applies to the vast majority of Maruse orders, allowing our U.S. customers to shop confidently without unexpected fees at delivery.

Recent Developments in U.S. Tariff Policies

On April 2, 2025, President Donald Trump announced a new tariff policy under the TAD-760 Reciprocal Tariffs regime, introducing a baseline 10% tariff on all imports, with higher rates for select countries beginning April 9. Nations like China, the EU, and Japan will face escalated tariffs—34%, 20%, and 24% respectively—based on their trade imbalances with the U.S. These tariffs are set to take effect on April 5, 2025. How Do These Tariffs Affect Your Maruse Orders?

  • Non-Personalized Orders: The majority of our non-personalized items are shipped directly from our U.S. warehouses. This means they are not subject to international tariffs or customs duties, ensuring a smooth and quick delivery process.
  • Personalized or Special Orders: These may ship directly from our workshop in Italy. If the order exceeds $800 USD in value, it may be subject to U.S. import tariffs under the new policies. If it’s below that threshold, it remains duty-free.

For Our European Customers

Orders within the European Union are shipped from Italy, meaning there are no tariffs or customs duties for EU-based customers.
