Meet the Designer: Inside the Mind Behind Maruse’s Timeless Leather Creations

At Maruse, we believe that timeless design starts with people — those who turn premium materials into objects of lasting elegance. Today, we sit down with Gabriele, the creative mind behind our leather collections. His journey through the world of Italian craftsmanship has shaped the soul of every piece we make.

1. Can you tell us a bit about yourself and how you became a designer?

Of course. My journey into leather design has been anything but traditional — it started with a deep curiosity for how things are made and a natural attention to detail. Over the years, I’ve had the opportunity to work behind the scenes on leather goods for some of the most prestigious names in fashion. That hands-on experience taught me everything — from selecting the right leather to shaping a product that’s meant to last. It’s been a process of constant learning, refinement, and passion.

2. What inspires you when creating a new leather piece for Maruse?

I’m inspired by people’s routines. I always ask: how will this product live on someone’s desk, in their bag, or in their hand? I draw from Italian architecture, vintage stationery, and modern minimalism — the goal is to create something that doesn’t shout, but whispers quality.

3. How does the design process work at Maruse — from idea to finished product?

It always starts with listening — to our customers, to what’s missing, to how people use their accessories. From there, I sketch, prototype with our artisans, test the proportions, and refine the stitching or edges until it feels right. We never rush it. Every piece takes weeks of fine-tuning before it’s ready.

4. What is your favorite product in the collection — and why?

That’s a tough one, but I’d say the Leather Portfolio. It’s classic, but it hides thoughtful details: the way the notepad slides in, the subtle structure, the stitching. It’s elegant and professional, yet deeply personal — especially when personalized with initials.

5. How do you balance tradition and innovation in your designs?

For me, innovation is not about being trendy — it’s about responding to modern needs with timeless tools. We still use traditional leatherworking techniques, but we apply them to contemporary items like laptop sleeves, organizers, or passport holders. It's a balance of heritage and relevance.

6. Why is Italian leather craftsmanship so important to you?

Because it’s part of who we are. Italian leather isn’t just about material — it’s about process, patience, and pride. When you hold a Maruse piece, you're holding centuries of tradition, filtered through a modern lens.

7. What do you hope people feel when they use a Maruse product?

A sense of calm and confidence. We live in a fast, digital world — when you grab your leather wallet or portfolio, I want it to ground you, to remind you of your identity, your values, and your style. It should feel like it was made just for you.

8. Any exciting ideas or directions you're exploring for the future?

Yes! We’re experimenting with new leather finishes, more compact travel formats, and small-batch collaborations. Always rooted in tradition — but always evolving.

Conclusion

Designing for Maruse is more than choosing shapes and stitching lines — it's about crafting meaningful objects that live with you, improve with age, and reflect the beauty of thoughtful design. We’re proud to have Gabriele bringing this philosophy to life, one product at a time.
